A Northern California company started by the family that opened fast-food chain Lee’s Sandwiches International, Inc. has issued a recall of 740 pounds of dried sausage products that may be contaminated with dangerous toxins.
During a food safety assessment in mid-December at San Jose-based Lee Bros. Foodservice Inc., a FSIS inspector was reviewing processing records and found that the water level in the product may have been high enough to allow formation of Staphylococcus aereus enterotoxins, which are a major cause of food poisoning and toxic shock syndrome.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture said 16-ounce packages of Lee’s Sandwiches brand pork sausages produced on Feb. 11 and pork and chicken sausages produced on Feb. 12 this year were recalled. The products were sold in Arizona, California, Nevada, Texas, Georgia and Virginia.
No reports of illnesses associated with the products have been made. Lee’s Sandwiches was not immediately available for comment.
LLee Bros. is a mobile catering distribution business owned by Chieu Le and Henry Le in San Jose. The couple founded Lee’s Sandwiches in 1982, making it the first company to franchise the concept of Vietnamese sandwiches known as banh mi. The chain has nearly 60 stores in five states and has made its coffee available in Taiwan, following its success at Costcos in California and Seattle.
